Fun last couple weeks…

So I’ve been waiting to post this since last week, but for some reason my computer isn’t reading my memory card for my camera so I had to try to find a cable that I could use to hook the camera up directly. I finally did, so I can get crackin’ here.

The weekend before last I went to the first annual Geek.kon in Madison, Wisconsin. It was a pretty good time! It was free, because it was their first year and they wanted as many people to check it out as possible. There was a pretty decent turnout, I thought, and I was surprised by the number of people who showed up in costume. There was even a Dalek. :) According to their website, over 1,800 geeks attended, which should mean that it was plenty successful to come back next year! There were two highlights for me, personally. I got to see the Great Luke Ski perform. If you haven’t heard of him, you probably live in an area that doesn’t pick up the Doctor Demento show. He’s a very talented parody artist, a former neighbor of mine and an all around great guy.

The Great Luke Ski, Geek.kon '07

The second highlight was getting to see Monte Cook! He spoke for about an hour, very informally, taking questions from the audience about gaming, writing, designing, etc. He also seems like a very cool guy, and I’m really happy I got to meet him! After he spoke, he adjourned to another room to sign books for people and take pics. So now, not only do I have a genuine game designers autograph on the inside of my PHB 3.5 to rub my dice across for luck, I also have this!

Me and Monte Cook! Eeeee!

I was originally going to do these as two seperate entries, but since I finally got my camera connected to my computer today, I might as well roll it all up into one…last night MC Chris played here in Madison! It was a GREAT show, although due to technical difficulties his set was shorter than he planned. I’m not complaining, though, he was up there for about an hour and it was nothing but entertaining. After the show, he was signing autographs and posing for pics, too! It’s been a great last couple weeks. :) If you look closely at my jacket (which is tied around my waist all old school like) you can also see the Doctor Who buttons that I bought at Geek.kon. :)

Order of the Phoenix

I feel much the same way about this movie as I did about Goblet of Fire. It was as good as I think it could’ve been without having been two movies. The biggest disappointment in my opinion was the lack of, oh, Order of the Phoenix. It was still a background focus, and they were featured in a couple scenes, but there was no time for any kind of character development. :( The climactic battle in the Ministry was pretty darn cool, though. The Ministry itself I think they did a very good job on, too. Dolores Umbridge was very well cast, at least I for one wanted to reach through the screen and bitch slap her several times….exactly the way I felt reading the book. And Luna was brilliant. I actually just looked up the actress that played Luna, seems this is her first movie. It says her mother didn’t want her to audition because she didn’t think she’d have a chance, but her dad took her anyway….good thing, too, she was spot on. :)

Haha, I have to go back and edit this in, I just read Full Frontal Nerdity for this week. They’re discussing Order of the Phoenix, too. :)

Dr. Who

Eeeeeeeeeeeee! I watched the first two episodes of season 3 on Sci Fi last night and I have to say it was GREAT! I think David Tennant was an awesome choice for the Doctor, and I really think I’m going to like Martha. Being this excited about Doctor Who makes me feel like I’m 9 again, getting to stay up late on Sunday nights to watch Tom Baker! Tom is still my favorite and always will be, but David Tennant is becoming a pretty close second, I think.

[stream of consciousness] I still remember when I was little, I was the only kid in my class who watched Dr. Who and I was so madly in love with Tom Baker’s Doctor. He was just the absolute coolest. I used to imagine that maybe I could be his companion one day, and I’d actually cry thinking that it would be years until I was old enough. And now that I’m more than old enough, I have to admit that no matter where I am I always scan the horizon to see if there’s a big blue police box anywhere. :) Yeah, there might be some photo sets that I can throw together more quickly in the meantime, but I think I’m going to really buckle down and start actively working on doing a Time Lord set. Yea! A blog!

And it works! And I can make it pretty colors! W00t! Right now, I’m mostly excited about the progress that’s being made on the site and the contacts that I’m making through MySpace. I’ve met authors, musicians…hell, William Shatner (yes, it’s an official site) is on our friends list! How friggin cool is that! The coolest part about it, and I’m probably going to sound a little cheezy here, is all the real people I’ve talked to through the site. Geeky men and women that have expressed genuine excitement and well wishes about Gnymphs. There have been several people and organizations that have put Gnymphs on their top friends list, which is a great honor and which I always try to reciprocate…most of the people on our top list have us on their top list, including KublaCon, Geek Label and the Villain Talk Podcast, plus two of our founders! It’s been very exciting, to say the least. I’m meeting new people every day, and I hope to start representing for us at some conventions, if I can spare the time and money. Check us out! Founders, I’m talking to you! :) Well, I have to get going for now, but hopefully I’ll be back more often now that we have blogs that work! :D

bloggity blog blog blog

I haven’t blogged in a long time for two reasons. One, my life is really pretty dull. Really. Two, the whole no-spam-filter thing really started bugging me. So, I’m going to take this opportunity to point out our Myspace page to all two of my readers. :)
Gnymphs on Myspace If I have any generic blogging to do, I’m probably going to do it there. Check it out, I’m pretty proud of it so far. If you don’t have a Myspace page, make one up just so you can be our friend. :)

More interweb geekery

Some more sites that I’ve found in my recent interweb travels…

This is a comic about a hockey playing, beer drinking zombie. Seeing God and the Devil playing Dance Dance Revolution is friggin’ funny. :)

Hockey Zombie

I only found this a couple days ago, so I’ve only read through issue 2 out of 6 so far. It’s about a couple dudes who suddenly find themselves in the middle of a zombie invasion.

Living with Zombies

I was trying to explain “Bulbous Bouffant” to a friend who had never heard it, but I couldn’t find my Dr. Demento CD that contains it, so I googled it–and found this really amusing flash animation for it. If you’ve never heard it, listen to it NOW! :)

Weapons set update

I was going to just make this as a comment to the other post, but it started getting awfully long.

I haven’t been able to complete the set yet, sadly. I’m going to have to redo it because the pics were too small. I’m sure you won’t mind an extra couple weeks wait for pictures that are much bigger. :P I would have redone it sooner, but I had to break for the family vacation thing for a week. I should be able to retake them Wednesday night–actually a good thing, because I was given a really nifty new sword on vacation that I’m going to throw into the mix. I’m not sure when it will be up, as I know there are several finished sets in line to be thumbnailed and published.

I can link to a teaser pic, at least, one from the too-small version of the set. After seeing the pics, I may dress a little differently, I haven’t decided yet. And maybe actually do a little something with my hair. Hmmmm.

New set being done soon….

I am doing another set tonight. I am. It’s been a really friggin long time in coming, as crap keeps happening to derail my plans, but I’ve resigned myself to using my front room with some sheets hung up to hide the clutter. :P I’m going to be posing with a wide variety of melee weapons, mostly my own. I did borrow some from a couple of friends, because I wanted to make sure I had aLOT of weapons. Not just alot…aLOT. Pardon my babbling, I got home from work a little while ago and I’m kinda punchy. I do still plan on doing a Time Lord set as well, but that’s going to require construction that I just haven’t had the time for. :(

I told you I’d take this pic someday…

Here’s me in my Dr. Who scarf that I’ve worn religiously every winter for almost…20…years…now. Ow. That was painful to think about. Twenty years. Okay, I’m not going to think too hard about that any more. My hair looks a little funky because it was still damp from a shower. Otherwise, I think it’s a decent pic. Here ya go, hope this works…

Oh, and incidentally…at my feet there is my cat. Her name is Spot. :)

Something pretty cool.

I don’t know how widespread the knowledge of this is, so if everyone except me had already heard of this, I beg your pardon. http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/1024/home.php I downloaded the first episode, and it was pretty good. :) I haven’t been especially talkative for a while, but I’ll try to come back and add a little more here sometime in the next couple days.

Or the following week, as the case may be…

So, yeah, I’m interested to know if anyone else out there in Gnymph land has watched this and taken a look at their site. I think it’s incredibly cool that they’ve gotten so many people who’ve worked on various Star Trek incarnations to work with them. I mean, Walter Koenig is going to be featured in the second episode and George Takei in the third…how cool is that?!?!

PS-sorry you’ll have to cut and paste, it doesn’t seem to want to link properly for me today. :(
